Actually it was the insulation in the attic. On Saturday night when we got home from the Musical Cast Party, we smelled a burning smell. Like burning plastic. We thought maybe someone outside was burning something and we thought nothing of it and went to bed.
Well last night, we smelled it again about 7:30. We went outside and could only smell it on the South side of the house. Then we realized it was coming from the vents INSIDE the house. So we looked it up online. We chalked it up to the air conditioner getting too hot and we turned off the A/C.
T.D.'s parents were in town and decided to stay an extra night. His mom was walking her dog and came running in the house saying "I think your house is on fire." I said "Sylvia, the house is NOT on fire." So I went outside to see what she was talking about. There was smoke coming out of the roof vents on the back of the house. So I said "I think your right the house is on fire."
So after trying to decide to call 911 or the Fire Dept number (I decided it was an emergency and called 911) The UFD came and went up in the attic. They cut a hole in our ceiling to get to where the smoke was coming from.
The transformer from our doorbell had gotten too hot, or shorted out. Since someone was really smart and put an electrical box underneath the insulation - it started smoldering the insulation (where the smoke was from). It also burned a big hole in one of the rafters to the ceiling.
The fire captain said we were extremely lucky that we didn't go to sleep because the rafter would have turned into flames overnight more than likely. And that attic fires often go undetected until there are flames shooting out the roof.
We are very blessed that everyone offered prayers, help and their homes to us last night. 10pm on a Sunday. We are also blessed that we stayed up late, that T.D.'s mom noticed the smoke and that the damage is minimal.
You might ask why we didn't notice the smoke before? Well the smoke alarm/heat sensor is LITERALLY right under where the problem was. It was faulty and never went off. That is until the UFD was here and bashed a hole in the ceiling for the smoke to get out.
So we will be replacing wiring, insulation and drywall soon after the insurance adjuster can come. Here are some pictures of the damage.

Dust everywhere inside. And insulation and wires in the driveway outside.
The little box is the transformer that caught on fire.
